A tough run and birthday cookout prep

Yesterday started with a 10 mile run on the trail. We started at 7 (ok, more like 7:15 because I’m always late), and we finished 10 sweaty miles in 1:22:00. This run felt hard! While it was the same course as last weekend, my legs felt heavy and it was a struggle. Since I took a rest day on Friday, I was expecting to feel fresh. No such luck and Serge and I concluded that we need more sleep. My goal for this week is to get 7 hours of sleep a night…I’ll let you know how miserably I fail at this. Oh well, 10 miles are in the books and I enjoyed my runner’s high for the rest of the day.

The rest of my Saturday was spent prepping for my dad’s birthday BBQ that we are having today. The first stop was Starbucks because we needed energy for all of our shopping :-).

20130630-064608.jpg
Annabelle enjoyed the summer day and she kept her sunglasses on for an entire 30 seconds.

20130630-064708.jpg
The first stop was Giant. We bought chips, guacamole, hot dogs, ground beef, rolls, Oreos (they were 2 for $6 so we had to get two), and ingredients to make dessert.

The next stop was Brown’s Farm Market. I love this place. It’s full of locally grown produce and it has a great cafe that serves sandwiches, coffee drinks, and desserts.

20130630-065104.jpg
Before we shopped, we ate at the cafe. My mom and I both ordered the ham and pear panini. It was ham, cheddar, pears, and honey mustard on whole wheat ciabatta bread and it was really good.

20130630-065254.jpg
I bought tomatoes, avocados, onions, lettuce, zucchini, squash, strawberries, blueberries, broccoli salad, and baked beans. 🙂

20130630-065455.jpg
The rest of the day was spent making the most amazing s’mores bars. The recipe is from here. I cannot wait to eat these.

2  1/4 cups Graham Crackers (1.5 sleeves), crushed
2/3 cup butter, melted
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup shortening
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
2 1/4 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
2 cups mini marshmallows   <—————-Seriously, the more the merrier with this one!
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
3 Hershey Bars

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Mix together the graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, and sugar.  Press into the bottom of a 13×9 in pan.  Bake for 7 minutes.  Allow to cool slightly.

Cream butter, shortening, sugar and brown sugar together.  Blend in eggs and vanilla.  Stir in flour, salt and baking soda.  By hand mix in the chocolate chips and marshmallows.

Spread over the graham cracker crust.  Bake for 10 minutes.  Top with broken pieces of Hershey Bars.  Return to oven and bake for 15 more minutes.  Remove and allow to cool before cutting.  Enjoy!

The night ended with some fireworks that I could see from my house. Poor Molly was so scared and she wouldn’t leave the bathroom :-(.

Do you like to bake?

Do you plan on seeing fireworks this year? Is your dog afraid of them?

Pizza and ice cream = perfect running fuel

Happy Friday!

Today ended up being an unplanned rest day. I am actually pretty bad at planning rest days because I don’t enjoy taking them, but I had a perfect excuse to skip the gym today…lunch at Panera Bread with my coworkers Marissa, Kelly, and Kyle.

For some reason I was starving when I got home from work, so I met Chris at a local pizza place for dinner. I had a salad and two pieces of pizza. I swear the slices weren’t really this huge…

20130628-220000.jpg

Once Annabelle was fed and in her crib, it was time for ice cream. It’s just too embarrassing to show you this bowl while it is full. 🙂

20130628-220257.jpg

I hope I don’t regret that ice cream during my 7 a.m. run tomorrow. We are planning on 10 miles with negative splits…hopefully.

It’s time to follow AB’s lead and head to bed.

Panera Bread or Subway?

Bouncing, Laughing, and Sleeping for 11 hours

Annabelle absolutely loves her new toy. Thanks for the present Grandses! FYI that is my mom’s version of grandma.
🙂

After bouncing and laughing the evening away, Annabelle crashed and she slept until about 9 a.m. I got up at 4:45 for yoga and in no way benefited from this, but Chris got to enjoy a morning of sleeping in! If only she would do this on a weekend…

Today’s workouts:

-yoga

-cybex elliptical for 30 minutes

-recumbent bike while using weights for 15 minutes (shoulder presses, bicep curls, tricep extensions)

-abs

Now for my PSA of the day…PLEASE do not leave your dog in the car!

20130627-155935.jpg
It’s around 90 degrees today and Chris saw a dog in the Walmart parking lot in a car with no windows open. We took action and the owner came out to his vehicle, but seriously…what was he thinking?

On a happy note, here is a picture of Molly. She had been so good adjusting to not being an only child ;-).

Running in the Heat

After a great 4 hours and 45 minutes of sleep last night, I woke up bright and early and headed to Bikram. I don’t know if it’s because of the temps outside, but the room was HOT today. The teacher usually opens the door to let in some air, but no such luck this morning.

20130626-160056.jpg

I decided to brave the heat once again and went out for a run during my lunch. I enjoyed struggled through 3.8 sweaty miles with an average 7:55 pace.

Mile 1 – 7:57
Mile 2 – 8:07 (hilly)
Mile 3 – 7:47
Mile .8 – I have no clue.

20130626-161230.jpg

Even though I can’t say it’s easy, I am pretty excited that I have been running a consistent 8 min pace (or below) lately. I need to put another race on the calendar…

Check out this article from active.com. It has great tips for surviving runs and races in the summer heat. Some of my favorite tips:

1. Acclimate – ease into running in hot temps and let your body get used to it

2. Run early – if possible, run early in the day so you miss the midday an afternoon sun and heat

3. Run a circle or out and back route – stash water, Gatorade, gels, etc. and you will can replenish when needed

10 miles, a lunch date, and AB stunk up Target

You know you are at work too late on a Friday if the parking lot looks like this.

20130623-064117.jpg

Friday night eats :-). Andy Nelson’s BBQ and a $12 half gallon of cookies and cream…yup, $12.

20130623-064151.jpg

20130623-064215.jpg

AB tried to eat her feet for dinner. She recently discovered her feet and she loves to grab them now. 🙂

20130623-064530.jpg

Saturday’s run was scheduled for 7:30 am. I was pretty sore from Friday’s x-fit workout (hamstring lifts, Spider-Man push ups, resistance band walks, dips, and overhead presses with Heismans and squat jumps in between sets), so I needed some extra motivation to get moving.

20130623-064824.jpg

Me, Serge, and Gina did 10 miles on the NCR trail and it was a great run. We finished in 1:21:23…a little faster than last week’s 10 miler!

In the afternoon, I had lunch with my friend Ming and Skyler. AB and Skyler are just about a month apart in age and they are already planning their next date.

20130623-093148.jpg

We stopped at Target on the way home…but the trip was cut short. Let’s just say, we heard it happen and decided to soak some of it up with paper towels and head home to deal with it. Thank goodness we have an extra car seat.

20130623-093607.jpg

Clean and happy in her other car seat. 🙂

I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

How are you spending your Sunday?

Runner’s High and Avoiding Injury

Happy Thursday! This post brought to you by AB who woke up at 4 this morning. It was very thoughtful of her to wake me up with enough time to blog before 6 am yoga…

Workout Recap for the Week

Monday
Spin
Bikram yoga

Tuesday
Bikram yoga (6 am)

20130620-042424.jpg
Body pump

Wednesday
6.3 miles (right around an 8 minute pace)

I ran with Serge (pictured below) and it was one if those runs that felt amazing because A. an 8 minute pace felt comfortable instead of like torture B. I finally feel back in shape and nothing serious is going on with injuries.

20130620-042918.jpg

I do however have some blister issues and my feet are pretty sore…but this is not serious and will hopefully be better soon. I am really itching to sign up for another race this summer…any suggestions?

Still waiting for that runner’s high? Check out this article from Active.com
When Does Running Get Easier for Beginners?

My Tips for Avoiding Injury (with my injury track record, I’m not sure I should be giving tips, LOL)

1. Listen to your body. If something doesn’t feel right, take the day off from running. It is better to sit out for a few days than miss a few months because you made something worse.

2. Cross train. I have been way better at this lately. Hop on the elliptical, rower, or stair master or take a spin class. This will help build up your cardio but also give your body a rest from running.

3. Stretch and Foam Roll. I have not been good about this in the past, but I bought a new foam roller and it feels amazing after a run.

4. Increase mileage safely. Don’t just jump right from a 5k to a 10 miler. Try to add in mileage over a few weeks and build up to a new distance.

5. Rest days! We all know when our body needs a break. Stay in bed on Saturday morning, have some coffee, and put your feet up. You deserve it and your body needs it!

Annabelle update!

She may like bananas…maybe.

20130620-045146.jpg

She’s still the best thing in the whole wide world.

Baltimore 10 Miler Race Recap

Saturday morning started bright and early and it was a beautiful morning for a run.

20130616-075908.jpg

20130616-075953.jpg

We arrived at the race start around 6:15, got ready, and did a short warm-up jog. We lined up right by the 8 minute pace group and the goal was to keep that 8 minute pace.

For the first 5 miles we stayed right behind or right in front of the 8 minute pacers and we felt pretty strong.

B10:
LINDA crossed the 5M at 08:11 AM
Course time: 00:40:28
Pace: 08:06 min/mi

We were able to stick with the group until about mile 7-8 and then we hit the wall. The course got very hilly and we just couldn’t keep up. I was actually feeling pretty good, except my feet were screaming. I was definitely working on some pretty nasty blisters. I really wanted to take a picture of them, but I don’t want you guys to stop reading :-).

I pushed through to the end…I had to beat the old guy with long white hair that came up on me when I could see the finish line. I ended up finishing in 1:21:54. Since this was my first 10 miler, it’s a new PR! Lol.

B10:
LINDA crossed the Finish at 08:52 AM
Course time: 01:21:54
Pace: 08:12 min/mi

After the race we sat in the grass and enjoyed a few cold (and free) beverages.

20130616-145509.jpg

Me, Serge, and Rebecca. We all finished within a few minutes of each other.

20130616-145607.jpg

The race premium was super nice this year. This jacket is actually pretty heavy and will be great for cooler weather.

20130617-083324.jpg

Did you race this weekend?
Any PRs?

Happy 5 months Annabelle!

I can’t believe she is already 5 months old! We are very fortunate to have a happy and healthy baby girl.

20130613-203555.jpg

She had a great day because she finally got to meet this bird we are always talking about. BTW, Chris didn’t even smile this big on our wedding day. LOL.

20130613-203741.jpg

In honor of AB’s 5 month birthday…

I got up before 5 and went to the 6 am Bikram class.

20130613-204036.jpg

I took a body pump class during lunch and I did 500 squats.

I microwaved my Amy’s lunch for 5 minutes.

20130613-204222.jpg

I made a 5 ingredient omelette for dinner…zucchini, squash, mushrooms, spinach, and cheese. Having half of an avocado with my omelette was the best decision of my day.

20130613-212115.jpg

I made oatmeal chocolate chip cookies and I added milk chocolate chips AND white chocolate chips. I will eat 5 of them tonight. JK, I won’t. 🙂

20130613-212317.jpg

20130613-212340.jpg

On Saturday, I will double 5 miles while running the Baltimore 10 Miler.

20130613-212709.jpg

Are you racing this weekend?

Cookies/pastries or ice cream?
Both…duh.
