Zooma Race Recap!

Saturday started bright and early…5 am.  I woke up, pumped, got dressed, and ate half of a Garukabar and a banana.  I also went down to the lobby and got a complimentary cup of coffee.

We started walking to the start line at about 6 am.  Both the half marathon and the 10k started at the Navy-Marine Core Memorial Stadium.

Before the race

The Zooma race started promptly at 7 am…while I was still in the port-a-potty line.  I jumped in around the 2:30 minute pace group and I knew it was going to be tough to make it around everyone.  Ideally, I would have liked to start between the 1:40 and 1:50 groups.

It was pretty hot and humid and I felt the heat almost immediately.  However, I actually prefer running in the heat over super cold temperatures because my hips and joints do not like to cold.  I was able to slowly but surely make my way past the pace groups…I was really trying to catch the 1:50 group.  I ran the first 6 miles in 00:46:38 with a pace of 07:47 min/mil.  I was super happy with this pace…amazed in fact.  🙂

At every water stop but the first one, I grabbed some water but only took small sips.  I took a gel around mile 7.5 and I was ready to tackle the last few miles.  I made friends with another woman and we paced each other up the hills.  It was fun (and challenging) to want to keep up with somebody else.  In previous races I have often found someone with a nice pace and tried to always keep them in sight.  On Saturday, I actually pulled ahead of my new friend during mile 12.  I really felt pretty good the entire race…except for my feet.  I had a feeling it wasn’t going to be pretty when I took my shoes of later.

During the last mile I passed the 1:50 minute pacer and I crossed the finish line in 01:48:27 with an overall pace of 08:17.  I placed 14th out 183 women in the 30-34 age group.

Post race picture…although this was not a PR (I ran a 01:46:57 two years ago), it was my personal best since having Annabelle :).

This race did not give out medals but we received a necklace, a yoga mat, and a water bottle instead.

Each participant also got a “lunch box” that included chicken salad or hummus, crackers, carrots, and an apple.

Photo from Tina…She is one of my favorite bloggers and I tried to find her and say hi…no luck though.

I was very hot and my feet were screaming, so we walked back to the hotel.  I showered and we packed up to head home.  I really would have loved to stay and hang out in Annapolis for the day, but Chris had to work in the evening.

On the way home we stopped for breakfast.  I ordered 2 eggs over easy, home fries, and an everything bagel.  I always have a weird “hunger” after running…I usually have an upset runners stomach mixed with an OMG I’m so hungry stomach.

My mom watched Annabelle while we were gone and I was happy to see that she was appropriately dressed for the occasion.

It was a really fun race, I am super happy with my time, and I can’t wait to see how I can improve for the next race.
