A tough run and birthday cookout prep

Yesterday started with a 10 mile run on the trail. We started at 7 (ok, more like 7:15 because I’m always late), and we finished 10 sweaty miles in 1:22:00. This run felt hard! While it was the same course as last weekend, my legs felt heavy and it was a struggle. Since I took a rest day on Friday, I was expecting to feel fresh. No such luck and Serge and I concluded that we need more sleep. My goal for this week is to get 7 hours of sleep a night…I’ll let you know how miserably I fail at this. Oh well, 10 miles are in the books and I enjoyed my runner’s high for the rest of the day.


The rest of my Saturday was spent prepping for my dad’s birthday BBQ that we are having today. The first stop was Starbucks because we needed energy for all of our shopping :-).

Annabelle enjoyed the summer day and she kept her sunglasses on for an entire 30 seconds.

The first stop was Giant. We bought chips, guacamole, hot dogs, ground beef, rolls, Oreos (they were 2 for $6 so we had to get two), and ingredients to make dessert.

The next stop was Brown’s Farm Market. I love this place. It’s full of locally grown produce and it has a great cafe that serves sandwiches, coffee drinks, and desserts.

Before we shopped, we ate at the cafe. My mom and I both ordered the ham and pear panini. It was ham, cheddar, pears, and honey mustard on whole wheat ciabatta bread and it was really good.

I bought tomatoes, avocados, onions, lettuce, zucchini, squash, strawberries, blueberries, broccoli salad, and baked beans. 🙂

The rest of the day was spent making the most amazing s’mores bars. The recipe is from here. I cannot wait to eat these.

2  1/4 cups Graham Crackers (1.5 sleeves), crushed
2/3 cup butter, melted
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup shortening
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
2 1/4 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
2 cups mini marshmallows   <—————-Seriously, the more the merrier with this one!
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
3 Hershey Bars

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Mix together the graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, and sugar.  Press into the bottom of a 13×9 in pan.  Bake for 7 minutes.  Allow to cool slightly.

Cream butter, shortening, sugar and brown sugar together.  Blend in eggs and vanilla.  Stir in flour, salt and baking soda.  By hand mix in the chocolate chips and marshmallows.

Spread over the graham cracker crust.  Bake for 10 minutes.  Top with broken pieces of Hershey Bars.  Return to oven and bake for 15 more minutes.  Remove and allow to cool before cutting.  Enjoy!


The night ended with some fireworks that I could see from my house. Poor Molly was so scared and she wouldn’t leave the bathroom :-(.
