I ran…and I ran…and I ran.

On the running front, I had a pretty great summer, fall, and winter.  🙂

August 2015

In August, I had the wonderful opportunity to run Ragnar Colorado.  I had never been to Colorado and running 200 miles from Copper to Aspen with 11 amazing people = the best thing ever.

October 2015

Jeanette and I checked the Chicago Marathon off of the bucket list in October.  We went with one goal…have fun and enjoy the race!  We did just that and it was absolutely amazing.

September 2015

I ran the Via Marathon this past September and it was one of the worst races of my life.  I was trying for a BQ (sub 3:35) and I ended up with a 4 hour plus finish.  I had a much better race back in 2014.

October 2015

A fun little 5k pushing Annabelle in the jogging stroller.  Running with the stroller and a heavy toddler is no joke.

November 2015

This was definitely the highlight of my running in 2015.  I’m not sure how we did it, but my friends Woody, Pryce, and I completed our first 50 MILER.  Yes, 50 miles!  Woody and Pryce killed it and finished in the 10 hour range and I finished in 11 hours and 52 minutes.  To be an official finisher, you had to finish in under 12 hours.  I’m glad I gave myself a few minutes to spare.  😉

February 2016

Kate and I ran the Disney Princess Half Marathon and had a magical time.  This was Kate’s first half marathon and she did so great…and she loved it so much that she signed up for another one.

March 2016

I ran the HAT 50k and it was as fun and challenging as last year.  This was my friend Wendy’s first 50k and she did such an amazing job.

So, what’s next you ask?

Coastal Delaware Marathon on April 24th!

A bad run is usually followed by a good run.

So, I’m in the middle of marathon training and I have had some BAD runs. What makes a run bad to me?  A.  Not hitting goal times  B.  Feeling horrible throughout the run  C.  Feeling down or in a running funk. Well, I’ve had a few too many of these runs lately.

Last week’s track workout included 2 x 1200m and 4 x 800m. I was getting over a cold and just could not get anywhere near the goal times. I even shortened 2 of the 800s to 400s. Bad run!

This past Tuesday, I set out for a tempo run and couldn’t manage one mile at tempo pace. It was hot and humid and I was tired. Bad run!

But alas, this 20 miler came along and many of the miles were at goal pace (under 9:00 minute miles) and I had some gas left in the tank at the end!  Good run!!!!

Maybe my new shirt from Janae at http://www.hungryrunnergirl.com helped me get through this one. She is so speedy and an awesome person. ☺️

Happy Saturday and I hope you have a good run this weekend!

Last really good run?  This 20 miler!

Favorite treat after a long run?  A big iced coffee and an egg sandwich (or a donut) 😉

If it was easy, everyone would do it.

Running is tough.  Running is tough for everybody.  My tough might be pushing a 7 minute mile and your tough might be pushing a 5 minute mile or a 9 minute mile. No matter what your pace or your running ability, running is HARD and it takes a lot of work to improve and reach goals.

Yesterday I ran during lunch with my friend Lisa and it was great. She did 10 miles (good job Lisa!) and I ended with 7.5 miles. These miles felt sooo good….they were slow (for me) and I just ran, kept it relaxed, and enjoyed every second.

Today was a whole different story. Jeanette and I wanted to make good use of a mild , sunny day, so we headed to the track for some speed work.  Speed work = brutal. Our workout looked like this…

Warmup run from work to the track

2 x 1200m (3/4 mile)

3 x 800m (1/2 mile)

2 x 400m (1/4 mile)

Cool down run from the track back to work

Total mileage = 5.1

Jeanette smoked me today and I finished each set about 15 seconds behind her (except for the 400s). 😉 I was gasping for air at the end of each set and could not get my breathing down. My legs felt ok, but my breathing felt off. I left our exact finish times at work, but I do know that we did similar workouts this time last year and they don’t compare to today’s times.  As in, we were definitely faster last year.

So, the moral of the story is that running is tough, running performance comes and goes, but every day that you get to run is a good day…no matter what.  We all have good days and bad days and you just have to hope that the good days outweigh the bad.

Please send me and Jeanette some good running mojo on March 21st. We will be tackling some challenging trails for the HAT 50k (31 miles). Yes, runners are cray.

Completely off topic but this post needs a picture. 😊

PSA from Annabelle…keep up with your oral hygiene.

Did you have a good running day or a bad running day?

Love or hate speed work?

Do you brush twice a day?

Stories from my iPhone…and ice cream.

Hi guys!  I’ve been totally lame sauce and I’m sorry about that. I’m trying really hard to get out of this funk and I think some sunny Spring weather is just what the doctor orders. PLEASE bring on the warm weather. Pretty please.

Since I need the pictures from my phone to actually remember what’s been going on, I’ve uploaded a bunch for a trip down memory lane.

Sweaty selfie after an at home workout I did in the living room while Annabelle ate lunch.  She thinks burpees are hilarious and we practice counting as I do them. 😊

Poor baby was having some tummy troubles last weekend. Toddlers and tummy trouble = absolutely terrible.

Eating chocolate Teddy Grahams at 9 am. Thanks Daddy.

Snow day breakfast of pancakes, turkey sausage, and strawberries.

Lots of snow…about 11 inches.

Chris and I had a rare dinner out last Friday (thanks Carrie!!!) and we enjoyed salmon, tuna, bread pudding, and flourless chocolate cake. 😍

Annabelle rocking her Maryland onsie from Uncle Gren and Aunt Janice. Go Terps!

Avocado omlette = perfect post long run meal

A perfect Sunday morning run with two of my awesome Ragnar teammates. Thanks for coming up Woody and Pryce!

I love seeing double digits on my Garmin.

Banana, oats, and chocolate chip cookies. 😀

Homemade ice cream cake just sounded like a good idea today.

THE LAYERS!!!

1. Chocolate fudge (chocolate chips melted into some vanilla almond milk)

2.  Crushed oreos

3. Red velvet cake ice cream

4. Chocolate fudge

5. Vanilla fudge ice cream

6. Cool whip

7. Sprinkles

Even though I wanted to eat it as soon as I made it, I waited until after dinner.  🙂

Post workout selfie…because you really needed to see my sweaty face.  PS Somebody please tell me how to fix my crow’s feet.  I did Jillian MIchael’s 30 day Shred Level 2 followed by 2 rounds of the At Home Jumping Jacks Circuit Workout.  On the second round I made a few substitutions to switch things up a little bit (burpess instead of tuck jumps, tricep dips in place of tricep pushups, and leg lifts in place of bicycle crunches). Dinner = leftover chicken mixed with veggies topped with shredded cheddar cheese.  Everything it better with a side of sweet potato fries.

Yup, I ate this huge chunk that is missing.

What is the best dessert you have ever had?

Best workout last week?

If you are in a funk too, I’m sorry.

Workouts, eats, and sweets.

And another weekend has come and gone… I wish I could say that I did something really fun or exciting this weekend, but I only really left the house to go to the gym and I didn’t wear anything but sweats and pjs. Anyway…here’s a recap of my workouts, eats, and sweets.

Workouts!

Friday

10 mile treadmill run – Miles 1-4 at an 8:35 pace, miles 5-10 alternating between 7:35 and 8:35.

IMG_7123

IMG_7124

Saturday

I didn’t have a lot of time, so I did a 27 minute Fitness Blender cardio workout (I can’t remember which one it was now).

Sunday

6 mile treadmill run at an 8:35 pace

15 minutes stair climber on fat burner level 14 (this was not fun)

15 minutes elliptical on random setting level 13 (hard effort using more arms than legs)

Eats!

Friday morning pancakes…blueberries inside and strawberries outside.

IMG_7118

IMG_7119

Fun fact: Annabelle LOVES blueberries and she will eat an entire container in one sitting if you let her.

Working from home = pjs and Starbucks (Chris is nice enough to always go get me one :))

IMG_7120

Chicken salad with almonds on a pretzel roll…bbq chips on the side.

IMG_7122

Annabelle’s dinner: chicken, strawberries, and cucumbers

IMG_7131

Sweets!

Well, after lunch on Friday lots of candy happened. I probably ate about 8-10 Hershey’s Hugs and one Resse’s Peanut Butter Heart. I think this may have attibuted to my tummy troubles during and after my 10 mile run that evening.

And it wouldn’t be a weekend in my life without some of the good stuff…this bowl was filled with two kinds of Ben and Jerry’s (Milk and Cookies and Half Baked).

IMG_7132

Random Weekend Pics

We finally got a decent sized snow storm. It started around 10 am on Saturday and didn’t stop until sometime during the night.
IMG_7129

IMG_7133

The weather was beautiful on Sunday…sunny and close to 40 degrees. 40 degrees compared to sub zero temperatures = summer time. Everyone was out and about without coats on. I even got my chai latte iced to celebrate the day. Don’t worry, we are back to winter tomorrow with a low of 1 degree. Awesome.

My love 🙂

What was the best thing you ate this weekend?

Best workout?

Are you watching the Oscars tonight?

10 miles of ice skating

Happy Monday! I hope you had a great start to your week! Since I had off for MLK day, I started the day with a 10 mile run with my running friends from work. I love these people. 🙂

2015/01/img_6901.jpg
We ran/ice skated for 10 miles on the NCR Trail. This trail, which is usually a compacted gravel trail, was covered in ice. We had to run on the grassy areas on the sides of the trail and definitely had to pay attention to our footing. Due to the conditions, we had to run pretty slow in parts, but we did have a few miles where we could pick up the pace a little. It was a great run with great company. 😊

2015/01/img_6899.jpg
I refueled with a spinach and cheese omlette with an English muffin on the side.

2015/01/img_6897.jpg
A little while later, I did this 8 minute abs video that Janae always talks about. It was really good!

The rest of the day was spent relaxing on the couch with my favorite little girl…

2015/01/img_6898.jpg
…and shopping for the world’s strangest and largest sweet potato.

2015/01/img_6900.jpg
Now that Annabelle is in bed, I’m watching The Bachelor. I’m not usually one to watch this show, but I just kind of fell upon it last week and it stuck. Oh yeah, I might also eat some cookies. 😄

What was your workout today? Was it a good one?

Do you watch The Bachelor? Would you ever want to be on a show like this??

A really good run and a really good Apple.

Happy Friday! This has been one busy week and I am so glad the weekend is here. I am happy to report that Annabelle is behaving like an angel (well, mostly) and now asks for her cup instead of a bottle. She also falls asleep after crying for only a few minutes and sleeps all night. This makes for a happy baby in the morning. #winning

2015/01/img_6877.jpg
I don’t know if it was my pancake and chicken maple sausage breakfast or my new running tights, but today’s run felt great. I set out to do at least 6 and had to fight the cold wind the whole time, but I ended with 8.10 miles. My route was pretty hilly, so I was happy to get in a few miles in the low 8’s. It just felt good to run today.

2015/01/img_6878.jpg
After refueling with a sweet potato topped with black beans, cheese, and avocado, I had an apple (and this was a GOOD apple) with peanut butter. I’ve been eating almond butter lately and I must say, it was good to eat some old fashioned peanut butter.

2015/01/img_6880.jpg
I also spent some time listening to the Serial podcast. Have you guys heard of this? I read a number of other bloggers talk about it, so I decided to listen. I had no idea the story takes place right where I work.

The rest of the evening was spent taking selfies and eating pizza.

2015/01/img_6882.jpg
Now it’s time to watch Shark Tank and eat some cake and ice cream! We are still celebrating AB’s birthday. 🙂

Have a great Friday night!

Do you watch Shark Tank? If so, who is your favorite shark?

Robert!

A long, hot, steamy shower…

…is the only way I warm up after a cold winter run. 😉

I didn’t head out until close to 2 pm today and I didn’t really have a plan or a set number of miles in mind. It was so warm out (read: 30 degrees) and perfect running weather. Well, almost perfect…we had some wind, but it wasn’t bad unless I was in the shade.

I started off with a little over a mile warmup and then headed to a hilly neighborhood to do some hill work. I did 6 hill repeats and it was TOUGH. PS I ran up each hill as fast as I could and then did an easy jog back down. I really wanted to do 10 hill repeats, but I only had the energy for 6.

I continued my run and ended up with 10 glorious miles. I even met a nice man walking his dog and we talked running and races. He suggested the Disney races and I think I’ll have to do the Dopey Challenge next year. 🙂

2015/01/img_6854.jpg
After a long hot shower, I downed a salad and pizza. I will def eat some dessert later.
———————————–
Baby Update: Annabelle went to bed at 8:30 and only cried for 10 MINUTES! She was asleep by 8:45 and slept until 7:30. It was a miracle!!!! Day 3 of no bottle has also been a success. She even ate 3 decent meals today. 🙂 I’m a happy mama.

If you need me, I’ll be spending the evening on the couch. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

What was the favorite part of your weekend?

A fridge full of candy and my toddler is OUT OF CONTROL.

Happy Friday! I don’t know about you guys, but I could really use a glass of wine and a pint of Ben and Jerry’s.

It’s a list kind of day…

1. I’m actually SUPER busy at work and I am not used to such things! Things should slow down once January is over…I hope.

2. Our refrigerator doesn’t have much in it, but we have enough Christmas candy to get us through the zombie apocalypse.

2015/01/img_6833.jpg
3. I ran with Jeanette yesterday! She had an accident and has been recovering for a month. It was so great to enjoy a (treadmill) run with her.

2015/01/img_6824.jpg

2015/01/img_6826.jpg

2015/01/img_6825.jpg
I ran 6 miles and it was a tough one.

Mile 1 9:13-8:35 pace
Mile 2 8:00 pace
Mile 3 7:47 pace
Mile 4 7:41 pace
Mile 5 7:35 pace
Mile 6 8:35 pace

4. We discovered an indoor play place close to our house. We will be spending the entire winter here because Annabelle loved it and it tired her out.

2015/01/img_6827.jpg
5. Speaking of Annabelle…wow, this week has been a struggle. She will be 2 on Tuesday (I still can’t believe it.) and she is in a very difficult stage. I blame us for some things that we didn’t end before they started, but we def have a few rough weeks ahead as we try to change some behaviors. Parenting is hard, very rewarding, but hard.

She fell asleep leaning against the window yesterday afternoon. 🙂

2015/01/img_6828.jpg
6. She still loves selfies.

2015/01/img_6817.jpg

2015/01/img_6820.jpg
7. Working from home = Chris brings me breakfast. 🙂

2015/01/img_6834.jpg
8. Go Ravens! I can’t wait for tomorrow!

2015/01/img_6785.jpg
9. I want to go to dinner and a movie. I haven’t been to a movie since last November (like November 2013). A date night is much needed.

10. I miss them.

2015/01/img_67451.jpg

On a scale from 1 to 10, how has your week been?

Moms…any encouraging words would be great. This toddler stage is tough!

2015 so far: the ups and downs in food and exercise.

Happy New Year! Bring back Christmas…I like it so much better than New Years. I’m like that guy in The Breakup who still answers the phone, “Happy Holidays!” even though Christmas was long gone.

So, I’ve been enjoying the healthy train since we got back from Florida and I didn’t even indulge on New Years Eve. (read: Chris got me dinner and Annabelle and I partied hard watching Sesame Street).

The Ups!

A 10 mile run and new running clothes! The shirt is Under Armor and the pants are Oiselle. 🙂 And the finger is Chris’…

Healthy Eats

I had a lot of Subway for a few days and then I ate veggie burgers, sandwiches, fruit, and veggies at home. Tonight’s dinner = turkey and cheese panini on whole wheat bread with an apple.

Speed work!

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/4cf/47377913/files/2015/01/img_6577.jpg
Since it was 20 degrees and WINDY today, I hit the treadmill for a run.

20 minute warmup

10 x 1 minute fast (6:58 pace) followed by 1 minute recovery (8:20 pace)

10 minute cool down

6 miles total and guess what???? It felt good!!! Finally!

The Downs…

I’ve been pretty good with workouts and worked out everyday except for yesterday. Guess what I do instead of working out? I EAT! After dinner, I consumed:

– 2 donuts (one chocolate cake and one glazed)

– 2 Twix Santas (they were $ .49 and I couldn’t resist)

– 1 Milky Way Snowman (see Twix)

– 1 bowl of ice cream with chocolate syrup

Sad but true :-(. Needless to say, I woke up feeling pretty gross this morning. But I rallied with a healthy oatmeal breakfast and went to the gym at lunch and I feel much better.

I just started using My Fitness Pal again and since I had lots of extra calories today, I did just eat dessert. The struggle is real. If you want to friend me and see how much dessert I really eat, my name is LMelz. 🙂

So tell me…

How is your new year going?

Best thing that happened today?

I almost forgot…

Annabelle loves to turn the phone around, hold it out, and say “selfie!”. We took about 10 today. 🙂
