All or nothing.

I’m an all or nothing type of person. I’m specifically like this when it comes to food and exercise. For example, if I’m on a good exercise regimine and start eating super healthy, I tend to not eat enough for my activity and go a little over board with being “healthy”.  On the other hand, on days where I don’t exercise and eat poorly, I tend to just keep eating because “the day is shot anyway…”

Today was a prime example…

Breakfast:  Think Thin Lean Protein Bar and coffee

Lunch:  chicken, broccoli, carrots, cucumber, tomatoes, and green peppers.

Snack:  dark chocolate covered goji and acai berries (small package)

Dinner:  black bean burger with sour cream and salsa and sweet potato fries

PAUSE. I should have stopped there and went to bed. BUT, since I only took a short yoga class today (hip/glute is on the mend), why not just dive head first into dessert and never stop.

Dessert:  chocolate cake with ice cream, lots of skinny popcorn, and more ice cream. Not pictured…thank goodness.

Now I’m sitting here feeling very full and very gross.  The only thing I can do is move on and start over tomorrow.  Here’s to a healthier tomorrow!                                                                 ——————————————————-

Now that I’ve shared way too much (and ate too much), here are pictures of the best part of my day.

Annabelle’s first baby ballerina class!  She was not a happy dancer and didn’t want to leave mommy’s side. She finally opened up at the end of class, so maybe next week will be better!

After dance class, Annabelle “helped” me foam roll. ☺️

I hope you made better food choices than I did tonight!

What did you have for dinner?  Dessert?

2015 so far: the ups and downs in food and exercise.

Happy New Year! Bring back Christmas…I like it so much better than New Years. I’m like that guy in The Breakup who still answers the phone, “Happy Holidays!” even though Christmas was long gone.

So, I’ve been enjoying the healthy train since we got back from Florida and I didn’t even indulge on New Years Eve. (read: Chris got me dinner and Annabelle and I partied hard watching Sesame Street).

The Ups!

A 10 mile run and new running clothes! The shirt is Under Armor and the pants are Oiselle. 🙂 And the finger is Chris’…

Healthy Eats

I had a lot of Subway for a few days and then I ate veggie burgers, sandwiches, fruit, and veggies at home. Tonight’s dinner = turkey and cheese panini on whole wheat bread with an apple.

Speed work!

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/4cf/47377913/files/2015/01/img_6577.jpg
Since it was 20 degrees and WINDY today, I hit the treadmill for a run.

20 minute warmup

10 x 1 minute fast (6:58 pace) followed by 1 minute recovery (8:20 pace)

10 minute cool down

6 miles total and guess what???? It felt good!!! Finally!

The Downs…

I’ve been pretty good with workouts and worked out everyday except for yesterday. Guess what I do instead of working out? I EAT! After dinner, I consumed:

– 2 donuts (one chocolate cake and one glazed)

– 2 Twix Santas (they were $ .49 and I couldn’t resist)

– 1 Milky Way Snowman (see Twix)

– 1 bowl of ice cream with chocolate syrup

Sad but true :-(. Needless to say, I woke up feeling pretty gross this morning. But I rallied with a healthy oatmeal breakfast and went to the gym at lunch and I feel much better.

I just started using My Fitness Pal again and since I had lots of extra calories today, I did just eat dessert. The struggle is real. If you want to friend me and see how much dessert I really eat, my name is LMelz. 🙂

So tell me…

How is your new year going?

Best thing that happened today?

I almost forgot…

Annabelle loves to turn the phone around, hold it out, and say “selfie!”. We took about 10 today. 🙂

Happy Thanksgiving and my mom’s first 5k!!!

Hi everyone! I hope that you had a great Thanksgiving (if you celebrate :-)) with family and friends and I hope you ate lots of great good! We had a super fun time over here with my family.

We had a mini snow storm on Wednesday, so I decided to stay home from work and use my extra time to prep for Thanksgiving. This was my first year actually cooking, so it was nice to get a head start.

I made sweet potato casserole, a chocolate mousse trifle, cookie bars, and dressing. It was so nice to have all of this done prior to Thursday.

A white Thanksgiving Eve.

My parents flew in on Wednesday evening and I was SO HAPPY to see them. By the time we got home and got Annabelle settled down, it was after 1 am and we were exhausted.

We didn’t let sleep deprivation and freezing temps keep us from the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. My mom and I woke up and headed down the road to run a chilly 5k. The original plan was for me to run it and then back track to find my mom (who would be walking) once I finished. Well, she sure surprised me! I finished in about 24 minutes and headed back out to find her. It didn’t take long before I found her. She had decided to run instead of walk and she was already in her third mile! Since she had planned on walking, she was wearing a big winter hat and a long down coat AND carrying our packets! Even with all of that weighing her down, she ran her first 5k and finished in about 41 minutes. I am beyond proud. 🙂

After a stop for Starbucks and donuts, we headed home to shower and get the turkey in the oven. The day was made extra special because my Aunt Janice and Uncle Gren came over for a visit and it was sooo nice to see them. 🙂

We finally ate around 5 pm and it turned out very well for my first attempt at cooking. The menu included:

-Turkey and gravy
-Sweet potato casserole with marshmallows
-Corn
-Mashed potatoes
-Dressing
-Croissants
-Cranberry Sauce

IMG_6565.JPG
After letting our dinner settle, we dug into dessert (my favorite part of most meals)!

-Pumpkin Pie
-Chocolate Mousse Trifle (French vanilla cake layered with a cool whip and pudding mixture and topped with crushed Oreos…and repeat)
-Cookie bars

I made enough food for an army, so I’ve been eating leftovers everyday. I think I’ve had enough now.

I’m sad that I didn’t take a full family photo, but I did get a few good ones.

AB just couldn’t hang. 🙂 (Don’t worry, she was not really drinking beer or wine)

Grandses, Annabelle, and Me ❤

IMG_6575.JPG

It was a great day and I’m now looking forward to a whole lot of Christmas fun.

Trader Joe’s… I have missed you.

Last night, Annabelle and I had a fun night of eating dinner at Panera Bread and shopping at Trader Joe’s! The nearest TJ’s is over 30 miles from my house, so I don’t go as nearly as often as I would like to.

My goodies!

IMG_6360.JPG
I bought some normal stuff: bread, eggs, milk, yogurt, honey crisp apples.

I also bought some fun stuff: Ginger Cats Cookies, Chocolate Chip Brownie and Oats Bars, Almond Butter, White Cheddar Mac and Cheese (they had samples and AB loved it), Minestrone Soup, brocollini, and Pecan and Pumpkin Oatmeal.

IMG_6362.JPG
I also started some Thanksgiving shopping! My extended family (aunts, uncles, cousins, 2nd cousins, etc.) is having dinner on the Saturday before Turkey Day, so if I want dinner on actual Thanksgiving, it’s up to me!

IMG_6361.JPG
Annabelle was so ready for bed after all of that fun. 😉

Do you live near a Trader Joe’s?

What’s your favorite thing to eat on Thanksgiving?

Wednesday: Work, workout, what I ate

Good afternoon! Yesterday was another normal day in the neighborhood…a very rainy neighborhood.

My alarm went off at 5, I drove to work, and began work before 7 am.

Breakfast included oatmeal and a banana and my new obsession…hot tea!

IMG_6305.JPG
My workout was an X-Fit class at my work gym and it was a killer. Lots of squats, high knees, burpees, push ups, and about 15 minutes of AB work.

Lunch was leftovers from Tuesday night’s dinner…chicken, peas, and sweet potato tots.

IMG_6288.JPG
After a very rainy two hour commute home, I made a salad for dinner. Spinach was the base layer and I added peas, sweet potato tots, carrots, cheese, a veggie burger, and guacamole. I also snacked on some Wheat Thins. This flavor is amazing!

IMG_6290.JPG
Annabelle and I snuggled/wrestled on the couch for a bit and watched Sesame Street before she went to bed. She is going into a little biting stage and her teeth are so sharp! Anybody else have a 21 month old who is doing this???

IMG_6295.JPG
Once AB was down for the night, I enjoyed some oatmeal chocolate chip cookies that I bought at a bake sale today.

IMG_6296.JPG
I also booked a flight to visit these guys in December! I can’t wait!!

(Lauren and Rob (my #1 fan))

I hope you are having a great Thursday! It’s almost the weekend!

What time do you get up?

How long is your commute to work?

Any parents that can help me with the biting thing????

North Carolina, BFFs, and Banana Cream Pie

Last Saturday morning, Annabelle and I flew to North Carolina to visit my BFFs in North Carolina.

20140326-140635.jpg
Annabelle behaved pretty well on the flight and she had so much fun playing with her seat mate (a nice preschool teacher who got stuck in the middle seat next to us).

Once we arrived, Lauren was nice enough to make a quick stop at Starbucks because I was a walking zombie. I enjoyed an ICED soy vanilla macchiato because it was sunny and in the 70s. It was glorious.

Since it was close to lunch time by the time we got to Lauren’s house, we ate lunch and then headed out to enjoy the weather. We took a nice long walk and made a stop at the playground. I’m not sure how Annabelle felt about the swing, but she was super sleepy so maybe that’s why she doesn’t look thrilled.

Lauren really enjoyed her swinging experience. 🙂

Lauren and I sat on the porch and talked while eating animal crackers until she woke up. It was really nice to sit and catch up :-).

The rest of the night was spent hanging out…

…and eating ice cream and banana cream pie while watching White House Down (yes, Channing Tatum is amazing). This pie is from Harris Teeter and it is AMAZING. I don’t even like banana flavored things and I am in love with this pie.

Sunday was another fun day!

Breakfast: eggs with ham, red peppers, and cheese with hash browns on the side.

20140326-221515.jpg
Workout: 7 mile run on a local trail. Lauren, Rob, Mason, and AB went for a walk while I ran :-).
>

20140326-221707.jpg
Lunch: grilled chicken, sun dried tomato, and cheese panini with pasta salad on the side.
>

20140326-221819.jpg
Dessert (before dinner): we drove to NC State to get ice cream from their creamery. I got cookies and cream and campfire delight…campfire delight = amazing.

BFFs: Mason and Annabelle are great friends. She kept kissing him over and over again. 🙂

Snow Day: Food Edition!

Since it snowed all day yesterday, work was cancelled and we hung inside all day long. I did make it to Starbucks before it got too bad out. There was no time to change out of my pjs.

20140122-103224.jpg

20140122-103249.jpg
Breakfast: a sweet roll and a grande skinny vanilla soy latte

20140122-103434.jpg
Lunch: turkey, cheese, and mixed greens sandwich with apples and rice crackers and guacamole

20140122-103556.jpg
Snack: strawberry Chobani with a chocolate Bevita biscuit crushed up into it. Annabelle ate half of it.

Dinner: apple chicken sausage, whole wheat pearl cous cous, roasted sweet potatoes, onions, and broccoli. Loved this meal!

20140122-103822.jpg
Dessert: chocolate chip banana bread and a ciao Bella gelato square. 🙂

I wish we were having another snow day, but I’ll be heading to work soon.

Have a great Wednesday!

How often do you cook dinner at home?

Beating the holiday blues…and the holiday bulge.

I hope everyone had a great holiday with lots of family time and food! I LOVE the holiday season, so I always get bummed once Christmas is over.

How do I fight the “Christmas is over” blues? Don’t let go!

-I’m still listening to Christmas music and enjoying my decorations.

20131228-180349.jpg

20131228-180511.jpg
-I’m still hosting holiday gatherings. (More on this fun time later).

20131228-180804.jpg
-I’m still eating leftovers from Christmas Eve…I guess I should let those go soon right? This was a bagel sandwich made with ham from Honeybaked Ham.

20131228-181129.jpg

How do I fight the “holiday bulge”? Workouts!

-Insanity! On Thursday I needed a quick but effective workout. The solution was a Cardio Max workout from the Insanity DVDs.

20131228-181543.jpg
-Running! Duh, right? I did 7.5 miles on Friday and 10.5 today. Today’s run was very chilly, but I got to try out my new running clothes from Athleta and my new North Face running gloves.

What was your workout today?

The best time of the year!

Weekend Workouts

Friday – 11.5 miles with Serge. 8 minute pace and it felt great.

Saturday – rest

Sunday – 6.5 miles on the treadmill. After an 8 minute warmup, I increased the speed by .1 every 2 minutes until I reached a speed of 8.6. I also did some abs, push-ups, and a 2:30 plank.

How was your weekend??
What kind of workouts did you do?

Follow these 5 tips to have the best Thanksgiving ever!!

  1. Get in a morning workout!  I read that Thanksgiving has become the most popular holiday to run a race, so get out there and sign up for a Turkey Trot.  I find that when I get in a good run/workout, I digest my food quickly and I am hungry more often.  On Thanksgiving, this is immensely important as I intend to eat a few helpings.  I’m running the Y of Central Maryland Turkey Trot Towson!

If you don’t have a lot of time, try this short but powerful workout that you can do in your own home.

Turkey Day Workout

AMRAP (as many rounds as possible) in 25 minutes

  • 50 jumping jacks
  • 25 high knees
  • 10 walking pushups (or regular ones or on your knees J)
  • 15 burpees
  • 30 sit-ups
  • 30 tricep dips (I use my coffee table)

NOTE:  Please feel free to modify the number of reps and the total time as you see fit.  Just make sure that you get your heart rate up and that you feel challenged.  🙂

  1. Eat breakfast!  I can understand the “don’t eat now so I can eat more later” logic, but this will back fire on Thanksgiving.  Eat something healthy in the morning, such as eggs and toast or oatmeal and fruit, so that you are not famished by the time the main even happens.  This will allow you to make smarter choices and you won’t eat everything in sight because you are starving.  PS You will probably still eat everything in sight because it is Thanksgiving!
  2. Dress appropriately!  Proper attire includes:  spandex, sweatpants, and elastic.  If you happen to have maternity pants around, go with those.  J  The more room you have for expansion, the better!  Our day involves lots of food, board games, and football watching and all of those activities are best performed in sweats…or at least loose fitting pants.  Don’t get this comforable though!20131109-212235.jpg
  3. Strategize!  the landscape and make a game plan.  I don’t like to have all of my food touching, so I really have to work some magic when filling my plate.  I try to have a little bit of   everything I like in the first round and the second round is saved for another helping of the “best of the best” dishes.  No need to strategize for dessert…I’m having one of each and that is a fact (unless it involves coconut).
  4. Give thanks!  Sit back and relax today, spend time with your family, enjoy your dinner, and really be thankful for all that you have.  Give thanks for all the blessings in your life and do something nice for those less fortunate.  So many people are facing true struggles and even a smile or a quick hello can make someone’s day.

Strategize! SurveyGive I am so thankful for this little girl.
