If it was easy, everyone would do it.

Running is tough.  Running is tough for everybody.  My tough might be pushing a 7 minute mile and your tough might be pushing a 5 minute mile or a 9 minute mile. No matter what your pace or your running ability, running is HARD and it takes a lot of work to improve and reach goals.

Yesterday I ran during lunch with my friend Lisa and it was great. She did 10 miles (good job Lisa!) and I ended with 7.5 miles. These miles felt sooo good….they were slow (for me) and I just ran, kept it relaxed, and enjoyed every second.

Today was a whole different story. Jeanette and I wanted to make good use of a mild , sunny day, so we headed to the track for some speed work.  Speed work = brutal. Our workout looked like this…

Warmup run from work to the track

2 x 1200m (3/4 mile)

3 x 800m (1/2 mile)

2 x 400m (1/4 mile)

Cool down run from the track back to work

Total mileage = 5.1

Jeanette smoked me today and I finished each set about 15 seconds behind her (except for the 400s). 😉 I was gasping for air at the end of each set and could not get my breathing down. My legs felt ok, but my breathing felt off. I left our exact finish times at work, but I do know that we did similar workouts this time last year and they don’t compare to today’s times.  As in, we were definitely faster last year.

So, the moral of the story is that running is tough, running performance comes and goes, but every day that you get to run is a good day…no matter what.  We all have good days and bad days and you just have to hope that the good days outweigh the bad.

Please send me and Jeanette some good running mojo on March 21st. We will be tackling some challenging trails for the HAT 50k (31 miles). Yes, runners are cray.

Completely off topic but this post needs a picture. 😊

PSA from Annabelle…keep up with your oral hygiene.

Did you have a good running day or a bad running day?

Love or hate speed work?

Do you brush twice a day?

I’m on a plane.

Yesterday was a very long, but fun day…

– wake up at 4:20 for an early morning run…8 recovery miles at an 8:34 pace and a 3:00 minute plank

– egg, ham, and cheese bagel for breakfast

– 3 hours of work

– flight to Florida to visit my brother and his family!!!

Annabelle fell asleep while we were landing…look at that face. 🙂

– grilled chicken salads for dinner

– Koda and I decided it was bed time around 11.

BTW…it’s 66 degrees here right now. Home temperature is 23 degrees. Florida for the win. 🙂

When is the last time you were on a plane?

What’s the temperature where you live?

A double bath kind of day.

Just an FYI…I’m going on an ice cream detox until at least Friday :-). I ate this last night and enjoyed every bite.

Poor Annabelle got a stuffy nose last night, so she’s a little under the weather today.

We went to breakfast and had to get home in a hurry. This.was.gross.

After her second bath of the day, she and Chris napped and I organized her clothing. I have 5 bins full of clothing that doesn’t fit her anymore and I’m not even finished. If we have another girl in the future, we are set. 🙂

I finally headed out for a run in the late afternoon and this is what I saw as I parked my car at the NCR Trail.

This is a really cool steam train that takes passengers on short rides along the trail. It’s really cool to see in person and I hear it’s sold out for a while!

I headed out and did 8 miles (4 miles out and then turned around for 4 miles) at a little under an 8 minute pace.

I know this “hill” doesn’t look that bad, but it never ends and the steady climb is difficult on tired legs.

I made a pit stop after 8 miles and then headed out for 2 more easy miles at about an 8:30 pace.

Double digit run…check! I also did some incline push ups using a bench…I probably looked really strange.

I don’t mind cold weather runs because I always warm up pretty quickly. However, once I’m done and I cool down…I FREEZE! How do I warm up?

The sticker on my lid made me very happy.

Warm or cold weather runner?
Anybody else experiencing a double bath day???

A pretty good fall weekend.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who reached out (commented, called, texted, etc.) regarding my last post.  It really means a lot and I am truly touched.

Just to warn you, this post is on photo overload.

New haircut on Friday afternoon.  It just feels so good to get a great haircut.

Dinner at Outback on Friday night. If you have seen “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” you will understand why I am posing like this. 🙂

Beautiful trees in our neighborhood.

Annabelle in her new Puma track suit.  Thanks Grandses!

Target!!!  This is me trying to decide on polka dot skinny jeans.

I bought them of course.

Dinner on Saturday night.  That buttery roll at the bottom is the best thing ever.

AB fell asleep in her high chair at the restaurant.  Tough life.

Watching the NYC Marathon this morning.  Those elite runners are absolutely amazing.  I can’t wait to read everyone’s race recaps!  I went for a 7 mile run while the marathon was airing.  I ran 7 miles in the time they ran about 20…

Brunch at Juliana’s in the Village.  I just love her hat.  Thanks Uncle Disney and Aunt Emmy!

Spicy Tomato Soup….Chris claim that this is the best soup ever.

Crab cake and cole slaw.

Starbucks in the holiday cup.  The best time of the year is fast approaching!

This evening will be spent with the Ravens and my friend Papa John.  I hope you all have a great end to your weekend.

What was the best part of your weekend?

Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts?

A home cooked meal and watch out for your face.

Yesterday’s run was an easy 6.3 miles. It didn’t feel all that easy because it was still a gazillion degrees out.

We finished just in time because a storm was rolling in. BTW, I downloaded the Map My Run+ app and it’s awesome because it has an embedded camera. 🙂

After work, I made a home cooked meal for my mom. Ok, it was nothing fancy but it was healthy and delicious. We had grilled chicken, sweet potato tots, and brussels sprouts.

Annabelle had pumpkin and banana with some oatmeal mixed in. However, she prefers to eat your face if you get close enough. 🙂

She loves her Grandses. PS someone is turning 8 months old today!

What was the last meal you made?
What are your Friday night plans?

Coffee, workout, and my Dad as babysitter

I treated myself and slept in this week…it felt wonderful. Instead of getting up at 4:45 everyday, I’ve been sleeping to about 7 or 7:30 if Annabelle doesn’t wake me up first. Even though I’ve been getting more sleep, I still need to start my day with coffee. I made a special trip to Dunkin Donuts today.

At lunch, I took an X Fit class and it was a very effective 40 minute workout. We warmed up with 2 minutes of jump rope, 10 push-ups, 10 sit-ups, and 10 squats. The rest of the workout looked like this…

Afterwards, I hopped on the treadmill for a short run. I only did a mile because I wanted to test out my back/butt/hamstring issue (I’ve been having discomfort for the last two weeks). I’m happy to report that while I didn’t feel 100%, I don’t feel any worse because of it. I hope to take AB out in the jogging stroller for the first time this weekend!

I’m up way too late tonight, but let me leave with you this. My dad babysat Annabelle today and he is very good about keeping me updated throughout the day. Yes, he is available so let me know if you are in need of his services.

What are your weekend plans?

Birthday cake, manicure, and a not so good run

Yesterday we celebrated July birthdays in my office. Happy birthday to me and Marissa!

I do not like this picture because I look like a guy, but Marissa looks cute.

Last night I got a manicure from my friend Dawn. She does nails out of her home and she is awesome :-).

Since its been pretty hot in the Baltimore area this week…

…we decided to run on the trail at 6 am. We enjoyed 7.5 miles in the 90 degree 100% humidity heat.

You know it’s hot when even your legs drip sweat.

I can deal with a tough to finish run, but I am really bummed that I have some major pain in the my right butt cheek/hamstring area. It is uncomfortable to walk :-(. I’m really hoping that it will feel fine after sleeping on it. Did I mention how bummed I am?

Moving on to happy things…tomorrow is my bday and we are headed to the beach for a week! I cannot wait.

What are your weekend plans?
Any other July bdays?

A tough run and birthday cookout prep

Yesterday started with a 10 mile run on the trail. We started at 7 (ok, more like 7:15 because I’m always late), and we finished 10 sweaty miles in 1:22:00. This run felt hard! While it was the same course as last weekend, my legs felt heavy and it was a struggle. Since I took a rest day on Friday, I was expecting to feel fresh. No such luck and Serge and I concluded that we need more sleep. My goal for this week is to get 7 hours of sleep a night…I’ll let you know how miserably I fail at this. Oh well, 10 miles are in the books and I enjoyed my runner’s high for the rest of the day.

The rest of my Saturday was spent prepping for my dad’s birthday BBQ that we are having today. The first stop was Starbucks because we needed energy for all of our shopping :-).

Annabelle enjoyed the summer day and she kept her sunglasses on for an entire 30 seconds.

The first stop was Giant. We bought chips, guacamole, hot dogs, ground beef, rolls, Oreos (they were 2 for $6 so we had to get two), and ingredients to make dessert.

The next stop was Brown’s Farm Market. I love this place. It’s full of locally grown produce and it has a great cafe that serves sandwiches, coffee drinks, and desserts.

Before we shopped, we ate at the cafe. My mom and I both ordered the ham and pear panini. It was ham, cheddar, pears, and honey mustard on whole wheat ciabatta bread and it was really good.

I bought tomatoes, avocados, onions, lettuce, zucchini, squash, strawberries, blueberries, broccoli salad, and baked beans. 🙂

The rest of the day was spent making the most amazing s’mores bars. The recipe is from here. I cannot wait to eat these.

2  1/4 cups Graham Crackers (1.5 sleeves), crushed
2/3 cup butter, melted
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup shortening
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
2 1/4 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
2 cups mini marshmallows   <—————-Seriously, the more the merrier with this one!
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
3 Hershey Bars

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Mix together the graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, and sugar.  Press into the bottom of a 13×9 in pan.  Bake for 7 minutes.  Allow to cool slightly.

Cream butter, shortening, sugar and brown sugar together.  Blend in eggs and vanilla.  Stir in flour, salt and baking soda.  By hand mix in the chocolate chips and marshmallows.

Spread over the graham cracker crust.  Bake for 10 minutes.  Top with broken pieces of Hershey Bars.  Return to oven and bake for 15 more minutes.  Remove and allow to cool before cutting.  Enjoy!

The night ended with some fireworks that I could see from my house. Poor Molly was so scared and she wouldn’t leave the bathroom :-(.

Do you like to bake?

Do you plan on seeing fireworks this year? Is your dog afraid of them?

A fall marathon? Maybe try a triathlon?

I am really itching to run another marathon. I completed one back in the Fall of 2009, but I was injured and it was not a pleasant experience. In the Spring of 2011 I was scheduled for another marathon…but was injured again and had to drop to the half.

So, I’m thinking of doing either…

The Baltimore Marathon.

PROS:  This race is friendly on the wallet because no travel is involved and I have some friends doing it.

CONS:  I did this race in 2009.

The Charlotte Marathon.

PROS:  I have a friend already planning to go and it would be nice to do a race I haven’t done before.

CONS:  This will cost more because it requires travel…and it requires more time away from home.

To tri or not to tri?

I have some friends (Frank, Lucia, Jeanette, and Heidi…she is an Ironman!) that are awesome triathletes and it is really making me think about trying it out.  I think I am ok with the bike (I will need to work on not braking down hills) and run, but I will need some help on the swimming. I can swim to stay afloat and stuff, but it’s not pretty or speedy. We shall see…

This is Frank. I helped slowed him down during a few 25 mile bike and 6 mile training runs.

What do you think?
Have you ever done a triathlon?
When is your next race?

An evening run…and possible injury.

Today’s schedule was a little thrown off…Chris had a midday meeting and I had to write something for work = I was in my pjs until about 5 p.m.  Even if I do not get dressed, I always dress Annabelle.  I just feel better when she is dressed for the day :).

She loves watching ESPN with daddy in the morning.

My dad came up to visit tonight, so I went for a run while he and AB hung out.  I am very lucky to have parents that are more than happy to spend some QT with their granddaughter.

It was a gorgeous night for a run.  I did 7 miles in a little under an hour.

I felt great while running, but once I got home and showered I started feeling some pain in my left inner thigh area.  I really hope that it’s nothing serious and that I can stretch it out in yoga tomorrow.  Keep your fingers crossed for me!

I picked up Subway for dinner and as I was walking out, I saw a man that looked exactly like Jared (the guy that lost all that weight eating Subway) walking in.  I really wanted to get a picture, but there was no way to take one without looking like a total creeper.

As promised, here are AB’s new shoes.  Raven’s colors = added bonus 🙂

I also bought her these for summer…the Carter’s outlet is my new favorite store.

What do you think?

Do you prefer to run/workout at a certain time of day?

Shopping – love it or dread it?
